Can I put large beef and pork bones in the disposer?

A food waste disposer, also known as a garbage disposal, grinds scraps right in the sink: here is what happens with large bones.

Large bones

No, not with any model.

They go in the food waste bin. Small bones are fine on top models.

Cold water, a little at a time, mixed loads.Food scraps only. Never fats or oils, never anything that isn't food.

How it behaves in the disposer

Large bones are too solid for the chamber: they bounce around and come out whole. The grind would never be fine enough to flow: it would stop at the first bend of the drain. Soup bones and large pork or beef bones are too hard and bulky for any domestic model. They go in the food waste bin. Small bones are fine on top models. The place for this is the organic waste bin, not the sink.
