Can I pour chemicals into the disposer?

A food waste disposer, also known as a garbage disposal, grinds scraps right in the sink: here is what happens with chemicals and solvents.

Chemicals and solvents

No, not with any model.

Never: they damage the disposer and the plumbing.

How it behaves in the disposer

Chemicals and solvents are not food, and a food waste disposer grinds food: everything else is a foreign body. The grind would never be fine enough to flow: it would stop at the first bend of the drain. Solvents, chemical drain cleaners and concentrated bleach damage seals and metal parts. Ice and cold water are all you need to clean the chamber. Never: they damage the disposer and the plumbing. The right place is the waste stream it belongs to, not the sink, which does not dispose of it.
